1. Policy Purpose and Scope
This policy outlines the principles, standards, and procedures that govern the conduct of all individuals associated with Youth Impact Global. It is designed to:
- Protect vulnerable individuals, particularly children and youth, from all forms of harm, abuse, and exploitation
- Ensure compliance with international human rights standards and local legal requirements
- Establish clear protocols for reporting, investigating, and responding to safeguarding incidents and ethical breaches
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment for learning, working, and collaboration
2. Applicability
This policy applies to all individuals and entities affiliated with Youth Impact Global, including but not limited to:
- Internal Stakeholders: full-time and part-time employees, board members, interns, and volunteers
- External Partners: contractors, consultants, facilitators, partner organizations, and suppliers
- Program Participants: trainees, mentees, and beneficiaries of YITP initiatives
3. Core Principles
Youth Impact Global operates on the following foundational principles:
- Do No Harm: all activities must be designed and implemented to prevent physical, emotional, and psychological harm
- Zero Tolerance: YITP maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards child abuse, sexual exploitation, harassment, bullying, and discrimination
- Best Interests of the Child/Youth: the safety, well-being, and rights of children and youth are the primary considerations in all decisions and actions
- Confidentiality and Privacy: all reports and personal data must be handled with strict confidentiality, respecting the privacy and dignity of all parties involved
- Accountability: all affiliated individuals are responsible for understanding and adhering to this policy, and for reporting any suspected or actual violations
4. Safeguarding and Child Protection
Youth Impact Global recognizes its duty of care to protect all program participants from harm.
Prohibited Conduct
Affiliated individuals must not engage in:
- Physical Abuse: any act that intentionally causes physical harm or injury
- Emotional/Psychological Abuse: actions that cause mental distress, including verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation, or isolation
- Sexual Abuse and Exploitation: any actual or attempted sexual contact, exploitation, or harassment
- Neglect: failure to provide necessary care, supervision, or protection, resulting in harm
Safe Recruitment Practices
To prevent individuals who pose a risk from joining the organization, YITP implements stringent recruitment protocols:
- Background Checks: comprehensive reference and background checks (including police clearance where applicable) are mandatory for all staff, volunteers, and contractors
- Interview Protocols: interviews will assess a candidate's suitability to work with youth and their understanding of safeguarding principles
- Contractual Obligations: all contracts must include a commitment to abide by this policy, with violations constituting grounds for immediate termination
Safe Environments
YITP is committed to creating safe physical and digital environments:
- Physical Spaces: training centers, workshops, and event venues must be safe, accessible, and supervised. The "two-adult rule" should be observed whenever possible
- Digital Safety: online interactions must remain professional. Private, one-on-one digital communication between staff/volunteers and minors is strictly prohibited unless authorized
- Media and Consent: explicit, informed consent must be obtained from participants (or their legal guardians) before capturing or publishing any photographs, videos, or personal stories
5. Ethical Conduct and Anti-Harassment
YITP fosters a professional environment free from harassment, discrimination, and unethical behavior.
- Anti-Discrimination: YITP prohibits discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or socioeconomic status
- Anti-Bullying and Harassment: bullying, intimidation, and any form of harassment (sexual or otherwise) are strictly forbidden
- Conflict of Interest: individuals must disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest that could compromise their judgment or the integrity of YITP's operations
- Anti-Bribery and Corruption: YITP prohibits the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of bribes, kickbacks, or any improper advantages
6. Reporting Mechanisms
A robust reporting system is essential for maintaining a safe environment. YITP encourages a "speak-up" culture where concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation.
- Mandatory Reporting: any individual who witnesses, suspects, or receives an allegation of a policy violation must report it immediately
- How to Report: reports can be submitted verbally or in writing to a designated Safeguarding Officer, a direct supervisor, or via the official, confidential YITP reporting channel
- Whistleblower Protection: YITP guarantees protection from retaliation for anyone who reports a concern in good faith
7. Response and Investigation Procedures
YITP takes all reports seriously and will respond promptly and impartially.
- Immediate Action: upon receiving a report, YITP will take immediate steps to ensure the safety of the victim(s) and prevent further harm
- Investigation: an impartial and confidential investigation will be conducted by designated personnel or external experts
- Disciplinary Measures: if a violation is substantiated, YITP will take appropriate disciplinary action, which may include termination of employment/contract
- Support for Victims: YITP is committed to providing or facilitating access to appropriate medical, psychological, and legal support for victims of abuse or harassment
8. Implementation and Training
Effective implementation requires continuous education and awareness.
- Induction: all new staff, volunteers, and partners must undergo safeguarding and ethical conduct training as part of their onboarding process
- Regular Training: refresher training will be conducted annually to ensure all individuals remain updated on policy changes and best practices
- Accessibility: this policy will be made available in accessible formats and languages to all stakeholders
